About the Item

This is a lovely oil on canvas painting that was attributed to Charles Harold Davis when I purchased it about ten years ago. It is unfortunately not signed. The scene is a view through an open landscape on an early fall day. The tree in the foreground has lost more than half its leaves but the others, in the background are not as far along. It’s a bright sunny day with billowy clouds passing through this plein air scene. The colors are bright, the light is well directed and shadowed in places and the composition of the scene very pleasant. The brushstrokes within the application of paint are also very well done and there is a very convincing sense of depth to the scene. The work dates to around the 1920’s, when American Impressionism was at its zenith. Charles Harold Davis was born in Massachusetts in 1856. He started his adult life as a carriage maker but after viewing an exhibition of French Barbizon landscapes, he decided to enroll at the newly established Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Soon thereafter, a local businessman was so impressed with young Davis’ abilities that he offered him tuition to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Davis spent ten years in the Barbizon region of France immersed in its art and culture. Upon his return to America, he became a leading master in the Barbizon and Tonalism styles. Near the turn of the century, he evolved into Impressionism, a more modern style that he once again mastered for over thirty years. He located to Mystic, Connecticut and painted many local landscapes of the rural countryside. His paintings tended to feature large skies, billowing clouds and vivid color contrasts. All of those attributes are present in this work.. Charles Davis exhibited often, showing in Boston, Chicago, the 1913 New York Armory Show and Paris. Davis died in Mystic in 1933. Given that this painting is an attribution, there is no signature present. As previously stated, it is certainly very similar to other impressionist works by Charles Harold Davis. The canvas measures 16” x. 18” and is in good cleaned condition with a recent varnish coat. There are no significant issues to report. The frame is more recent and includes a linen liner. It seems to compliment the painting and highlight it, without upstaging it at all. The overall framed dimensions are 21” x 23”. The is very light signs of age and wear to the frame, not very noticeable and expected for its age of about fifty years.

Fine Impressionist American School Oil on Canvas; Family Picnic or Outing, 1925
Located in Baltimore, MD
This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. Visible on the reverse side is a vintage label that reads “Art...
