About the Item
A fine impressionist beach scene by American artist Charles Herbert Woodbury (1864-1940). Woodbury was born in Lynn, MA, and sold his first painting when he was fifteen years old and became the youngest member elected into the Boston Art Club at age 17. After graduating from MIT, he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, returning to Boston to pursue his career in painting. He taught summer painting classes in Ogunquit, some over 100 at a time, and eventually taught over 4,000 students, with over 100 solo exhibitions, and became one of the most influential artists to work in the Northeast.
Oil on canvas, signed lower right, inscribed “104” on verso stretcher and signed on verso. Woodbury referenced this painting number in his records with the title inscribed “Cornish Coast or Coast of Cornwall, 1903” (photo of record entry included). Housed in a decorative giltwood scraffito frame. Dimensions: 21 in H x 17 in W, actual; 28.75 in H x 24.75 in W x 1.25 in D. Ref: 810

A key person in the establishment of the Old Lyme, Connecticut art colony in 1899, Henry Ward Ranger is regarded as the leader of the Tonalist movement in America and was a leading painter in this country in the late 19th and early 20th-centuries.
He was born in Geneseo and raised in Syracuse, New York, and in 1873, enrolled in the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, where his father was a professor of photography and drawing.
