Charles Partridge Adams
Born in Franklin, Massachusetts, Charles Partridge Adams moved with his mother and two sisters to Denver, Colorado, in 1876 in an effort to cure the two girls who suffered from tuberculosis. In Denver, Adams found work at the Chain and Hardy Bookstore. He received his first, and only, art training from the owner's wife, Helen Chain. Mrs. Chain, a former pupil of George Inness, provided instruction and encouragement to the young artist and introduced him to other artists in the area including Alexander Phimister Proctor. Proctor and Adams developed a friendship and the pair embarked on a three-month camping trip in Egeria Park, Colorado. In addition to exploring, both artists did quite a bit of sketching on the trip. After their return to Denver, Adams and Proctor shared a studio for a short period of time before Proctor moved to New York. Adams remained in Denver and after a short stint as an art teacher he studied wood engraving with Major J.M. Bagley. He quickly abandoned the engraving for health reasons and began working in crayon. His business card read "Landscapes and Crayon Portraits" though he much preferred landscapes. The artist soon made a name for himself in Denver. He established a wealthy clientele that purchased a number of his paintings to decorate their homes and to give as Christmas gifts. In 1890, Adams married Alida Joslin Reynolds and the couple honeymooned in Estes Park, Colorado. That same year, he exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design. Three years later, the artist opened his first studio on Larimer Street in Denver. He began working in watercolor and had success in the new medium selling his paintings in stores in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Kansas City, and Chicago. Also in 1893, Adams became a charter member of the Denver Artists Club. In 1905, the couples dream of living in Estes Park was realized when Adams completed construction on a home and studio there. Adams referred to the studio as "The Sketch Box" and the family spent summers there every year. Though Adams is best known for his Colorado landscapes, he also painted in Yellowstone, the Tetons, the Canadian Rockies, the New Mexican Desert, and California. In 1914, the couple sailed to Europe where they spent five months touring. Three years later, Charles suffered from a near-fatal illness. In 1920, Adams moved to California where he opened a studio first in Pasadena and later in Laguna Beach. He became a member of the Laguna Beach Artists Association and began painting marine subjects. ©David Cook Galleries, LLC

John E. Thompson “High Bridge, New York City” 1924 Original Oil Painting
By John Edward Thompson
Located in Denver, CO
This exceptional 1924 original oil painting by influential Colorado modernist John E. Thompson depicts the historic High Bridge—New York City’s oldest surviving bridge—as it rises gracefully above the Harlem River. A rare and dynamic example of Thompson’s early modernist style, the work blends architectural realism with expressive, textured brushwork. The elegant stone arches, rhythmic spans, and atmospheric urban setting reveal Thompson’s mastery of composition and color.
Signed and dated in the lower right, the painting carries strong historical authenticity and collector appeal. It is presented in a custom vintage frame that complements the period and enhances its refined, timeless presence.
This rare early 20th-century view of New York City architecture is an important acquisition for collectors of American modernism, urban landscapes, and historic engineering landmarks. It captures a pivotal moment where traditional realism meets the burgeoning energy of modernist vision—making it a standout work in any distinguished collection.
About the Artist: John E. Thompson – Pioneer of Colorado Modernism
John Edward Thompson (1876–1945) is celebrated as the “Dean of Colorado Artists” and a foundational figure in introducing European modernism to the American West. Educated at the Art Students League of Buffalo and later in New York, he absorbed avant-garde influences while working in Europe, particularly inspired by Paul Cézanne.
Settling in Denver in 1914, Thompson became a catalyst for the region’s modern art movement. He taught at the University of Denver and the Santa Fe Art School, working alongside Andrew Dasburg, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Walter Ufer. His mentorship shaped artists such as Józef Bakoś and Walter Mruk, co-founders of the influential group Los Cinco Pintores...

Vintage Colorado Ghost Town Oil Painting by Harold Skene, Western Landscape
By Harold Vincent Skene
Located in Denver, CO
“Ghost Town” by Harold Skene (1883–1978) is a compelling vintage oil painting that evokes the quiet drama of Colorado’s mining past. This atmospheric Western landscape depicts a lone prospector and his pack mule standing among the weathered remnants of an abandoned mountain town. Set in late summer or early autumn, the scene is painted in a rich, earthy palette of golden yellows, sage greens, dusty pinks, and soft blues, capturing the stillness and solitude of the high desert West.
Painted in oil on board, the work is signed by the artist at the lower right and titled and dated on the verso, underscoring its authenticity and historical value. Skene’s careful attention to structure and perspective reflects his architectural training, while his expressive handling of landscape conveys the emotional weight of a once-thriving community now reclaimed by nature.
The painting measures 24 x 30 inches (image size) and is presented in a classic mahogany frame with overall dimensions of 30 x 35.5 x 2.75 inches, offering strong visual presence and immediate display appeal.
A graduate of Harvard’s School of Architecture, Harold Skene studied at the Denver Art Academy and the Broadmoor Art Academy, and served as an assistant to noted Western artist Allen Tupper True...
