About the Item

A Pair of Lake District Views by Charles Pettitt (1831–1885) 1. The Wetherlamb from Esthwaite-Water, N. Lancashire (signed, inscribed, and dated 1865) 2. Coniston Lake, Village Old Hall, Old Man from near the Old Hall (signed, inscribed, and dated 1863) Oil on canvas, each with arched top corners, 18 x 28.5 cm (canvas only). This finely executed pair of landscapes by Charles Pettitt captures the tranquil beauty of the Lake District in the mid-19th century. In The Wetherlamb from Esthwaite-Water, Pettitt presents a sweeping view across the lake, framed by gentle hills, with cattle and rustic dwellings anchoring the scene in pastoral calm. Its companion, Coniston Lake, Village Old Hall, Old Man from near the Old Hall, depicts the famed Coniston landscape with equal sensitivity, combining architectural detail with the grandeur of the surrounding fells. Both works are distinguished by Pettitt’s characteristic balance of naturalistic accuracy and atmospheric light, heightened by the intimate scale and arched format, which lend them a refined decorative quality. Biography of Charles Pettitt (1831–1885) Charles Pettitt was a British painter of landscapes active in the mid to late 19th century, known especially for his depictions of the English countryside and the Lake District. Working in oils, he produced carefully observed yet lyrical portrayals of rural scenery, often incorporating cattle, farmsteads, and waterways. Pettitt’s work reflects the Victorian appetite for picturesque and romantic landscape painting, combining faithful topographical detail with a warm atmospheric mood. His paintings remain admired for their tranquil beauty and evocation of place, particularly in Northern Englan
