About the Item

This original oil on canvas by acclaimed Colorado modernist Charles Ragland Bunnell (1897–1968), titled Manitou, Colorado with Pikes Peak View, was created circa 1928–1929. The painting captures a panoramic view of Manitou Springs with Pikes Peak rising majestically in the background. Executed in rich earthy tones with expressive brushwork, this early 20th-century landscape exemplifies Bunnell’s representational style before his later shift to abstraction, combining natural grandeur with a sensitive, modernist approach to color and light. Presented in a custom gold frame with archival backing, the artwork measures 28 ¼ x 32 ⅛ x 1 ¾ inches overall, with a canvas image size of 22 ¼ x 26 ¼ inches. This piece is held in excellent vintage condition and offers collectors a rare glimpse into Bunnell’s early Colorado landscapes. Provenance: Private collection, Denver, Colorado. About the Artist: Charles Ragland Bunnell was a pioneering painter and educator who played a key role in Colorado’s modernist movement. Trained at the Broadmoor Art Academy under Birger Sandzén and Ernest Lawson, he began with Impressionist-influenced landscapes before evolving into a leading abstract artist by the 1950s. His career included exhibitions at the Carnegie International, Art Institute of Chicago, and the New York World’s Fair. A dedicated teacher, Bunnell mentored numerous artists and exhibited alongside major figures such as Elaine de Kooning and Louise Nevelson. This work is a compelling early example of Bunnell’s ability to merge naturalistic representation with modernist sensibilities, making it a valuable addition to any collection of American Western or early modernist art.
