About the Item

This beautiful, large painting, entitled the ‘Pyramids de Gyzeh’ (Pyramids of Giza), was created by Charles-Theodore Frere. Frere was a notable Orientalist painter, who regularly exhibited at the Salon in Paris in the late 19th Century. The artist visited Algeria for the first time in 1837, initiating a number of trips to the country, and a great deal of artwork inspired by his experiences there. In the mid-19th Century, Frere journeyed to Constantinople, then Syria, Palestine, Nubia and Egypt, where he set up his studio. This painting was worked up in France, most likely based on studies that Frere had made in Egypt. It was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1885, which took place in the Palais de Champs-Elysees. Frere’s painting depicts a group of Egyptian figures lounging in the countryside outside Giza. In the foreground, a dog bows its neck to drink from a puddle. A group of figures, including one woman in a burka and two men in turbans, relax on a bank and engage in conversation, their urns of water lying on the grass beside them. One woman, similarly covered, crouches by a pool of water to wash a white sheet, taken from the basket beside her. In the left-hand distance, a third woman is depicted walking away, carrying a large water urn on her head. The people and dog serve only as staffage, while the real focus of the painting is the landscape. The figures provide the scene with a sense of depth and scale, highlighting the vastness of the space they are placed within. They have a small, transitory impact on the landscape compared to the ancient and unchanging pyramids of Giza, which are just visible as silhouettes in the distance. The wide horizon is dotted with palm trees, and just before the pyramids flows the Nile, populated by a flock of birds. The sun sets on the scene, covering everything in a golden light. This painting is exceptionally beautiful in its photo-realist style and in the way its subject reflects on the passage of time. The work is inscribed to the bottom left corner of the canvas 'Th. Frere. / Pyramides de Gyzeh. / Egypte’, and is housed in a gilded frame.
