About the Item
Stony Beach is a small realist oil painting on gesso panel, 8 x 10 inches (approx 20 x 25cm). Inspired by visits to the Suffolk coast town of Aldeburgh, Christopher Witchall continues his preoccupation with the movement and colours of the ocean, a movement frozen in time between the ancient past and an endless future. The artist’s unsentimental approach to his subjects combine two great passions - a love of traditional painting techniques and a fascination with the photographic image. The result of this are paintings that are both painterly and highly realistic. Stony Beach is painted on a deep edge cradled panel, so there is no need for framing and can be hung immediately. It is signed on the back and supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Christopher Witchall was born in 1954 in Bishop’s Stortford. He studied Fine Art painting at York School of Art and Preston Polytechnic (Lancaster) in the early 1970s and has continued to paint and exhibit since. His first job after leaving art school was a brief spell as a set builder and scene painter for a repertory theatre company in Lancaster, before moving to London and running an art and graphics supply business. He relocated to Cambridge in 1988 to become manager and curator of The Heffer Gallery, a post held for 15 years. In 2003, he opened The Wall gallery in Ely as owner and Director until 2006. Christopher is now a full-time artist and lives with his wife near Ely, Cambridgeshire.
