Description:
Clarence Gihon traveled to France when he was about 23 years old. He spent over 35 years in Paris and vicinity. Gihon studied at the Académie Julian, a major Parisian art academy. His paintings include urban landscapes, seascapes, town‑scenes, scenes of Paris, and scenes of Normandy and the French coast. His technique has strong Post‑Impressionist influences and the hallmarks of luminous colors, dynamic brushwork, and expressive experimentation.
“Gathering Wildflowers on a Breezy Day” shows a Normandy harbor. It captures both fleeting light, colorful reflections, and a sense of a breezy atmosphere. Gihon is one of the American painters who not only studied with American Impressionists like William Merritt Chase, but he emersed himself studying the art of France. He readily adopted French painting practices and subject matter as was the case with many of the noted American painters working in France and at the Academie Julian. His career illustrates a frequented path for American Impressionists painters. Many American artists assimilated French academic and avant‑garde currents to produce outstanding post-impressionist and impressions works.
Most of Gihon’s major paintings have not appeared on the secondary or on the auction market. This is perhaps one of his best.
