About the Item
A major, mid century modern work by French artist Claude Dechezelle (1928-2003). Having studied with the art deco painter and designer Jean Dupas at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts, Dechezelle obtained the Velasquez Prize and with it, a scholarship to work at the Casa Velazquez in Madrid from 1955-1957. The painted presented here, depicting an abstracted southern city, was painted during this period. Dechezelle would continue to obtain the Eugène Carrière Prize in 1965, and a Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1984. His work was shown at the Paris Biennale, and a posthumous exhibition took place at the Fondation Taylor in 2005: His work is elegant, timeless and dynamic, and perfect for the 21st Century.
Paintings by Dechezelle are held by the Casa de Velazquez and the National Art Historical Institute in Paris.

Claude Dechezelle
Claude Dechezelle was a French painter who was the pupil of Jean Dupas at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in the 1950s, then a boarder at Casa de Velázquez in Madrid for two seasons from 1955–57. He was a professor of drawing at the city of Paris. His painting was a complete palette of different tones of blue, his drawing was frank, dry. Dechezelle translated the landscapes of the Midi with elegance and contrasts of light.
