Below the Wood is an original painting by Colin Allbrook depicting one of the many rural activities in Devon. Painted in Oil on canvas, the size of the image is 51cm x 61cm and framed the dimensions are 61cm x 71cm.
Over the winter months many of the fields
valleys here echo to the sound of gunshots as the annual pheasant season is in full swing, something that is part of the annual calendar of events in Devon. Whether it is on the larger estates or just a few farmers getting together, there seem to be pheasants everywhere. Although it can get cold and very wet, beating for one of the shoots is a great way to gather reference for my paintings. This painting of the woodland edge is where the guns stand at their pegs waiting for the birds to fly over. The strong winter sunlight on this cold bright day illuminates the figures as they walk along the path to their posts, and brings a glow to the winter trees beyond. For me the sunshine is a bonus bringing out these warm autumn colours on the trees which contrast with the deep cool shadows in the woodland. Good for me but for the guns, a duller, cooler day would mean the birds fly better.
Colin Allbrook is one of the most respected and renowned painters in the South-West of England.
Working in both oils and watercolours and through the use of light and colour, Colin depicts the life and activity of the area. His work has been regularly selected for prestigious exhibitions such as the Sunday Times Watercolour competition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils. He is an elected member of the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA). He has received many awards for his work, including, in 2009, both
the Turner Watercolour Award and the Rowland Hilder Award for landscape painting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition. He has also twice won the Terence Cuneo medal at the SEA and the Excellence in Watercolour; prize at the Royal West of England Academy four times. Selling
mainly through exhibitions galleries his paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the world. Colin has lived and worked in Umberleigh in Devon for over 40 years, where he has a studio by the River Taw, in a beautiful area which inspires so much of his work

Forest Tapestry is an original Trevor Waugh oil painting. The earth tones throughout are broken up by the highlights, giving the piece a rich texture, particularly regarding the forest floor.
Trevor Waugh was born in 1952 and grew up in London. Trevor studied at The Slade School of Fine Art from 1970 -1974 (BA) under the guidance of Sir William Coldstream, Professor of The Slade at the time, Patrick George, Philip Sutton, David Hockney, Euan Uglow and Bernard Cohen. During his time at The Slade he was invited by Sir William Coldstream and Patrick George to exhibit alongside them at The Collegiate Theatre at University College, London, 1971. He was also a contributor to The Young Contemporaries Exhibition at The Royal Academy 1972.
