About the Item
Beautiful watercolor of snowy mountains in the spring at Glen Spean, Scotland by Colin Bent Phillip. Watercolor on Paper, signed and dated lower right. Exhibition label on reverse from The Alpine Club of London.
Elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1886, to the Royal Society of Scottish Painters in Watercolor in 1890, and to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolors in 1898. Works by Colin are in the collection
Born in Kensington in 1855, he was the son of fellow artist John "Spanish" Phillip (1817–1867).
Education: Phillip studied art at the Lambeth School of Art, in Edinburgh, and also under the artist David Farquharson.
He specialized in landscapes, particularly those depicting the Scottish Highlands and other mountainous regions such as the Alps. His work was primarily in watercolor.
Starting in 1882, he exhibited his work at several major London galleries. He was a prolific exhibitor, showing 15 works at the Royal Academy, 114 at the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), and 205 at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW). He was elected to the RSW in 1890 and the RWS in 1898.
Collections: Examples of his work are held in public collections, including the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Alpine Club Collection.
