About the Item

Coastal landscape with fishermen hanging their nets, signed and dated “Colin Hunter 1878”, oil on canvas. This evocative coastal scene with a cloudy sky depicts fishermen at work along what is likely the Scottish shoreline. In the foreground, a boat rests hauled up on land, its solid presence anchoring the composition. Along the path leading down toward the fishermen, a small group of ducks introduces a quiet, everyday detail that softens the working character of the scene. The fishermen are shown hanging their nets, while slightly farther back another boat is being tarred, suggesting the rhythm of labour that defines life by the sea. Out on the calm water, a sailing vessel lies at anchor, and beyond it low, gently rising hills forming the background. The painting is marked by a restrained palette, careful observation, and a balanced interplay between human activity and the natural environment. Colin Hunter (1841–1904) was a Scottish painter best known for his landscapes and coastal scenes, particularly those depicting the lives of fishermen and rural communities. Born in Glasgow, he was largely self-taught before gaining recognition for his naturalistic approach and sensitive handling of light and atmosphere. Hunter was associated with the circle of painters often linked to the Glasgow School, though his work retained a strong individual character rooted in realism rather than overt stylistic experimentation. His paintings frequently combine narrative elements with a quiet lyricism, capturing moments of work and rest within expansive landscapes. In 19th-century Scottish painting Hunter is valued for his truthful depictions of coastal life and his ability to convey both the hardship and dignity of those who lived and worked by the sea.

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
