DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
This painting depicts a panoramic view of Palma Bay from the sea, dominated by a wide, cloud-covered sky, with the city suggested in the distance. On the horizon, the unmistakable silhouette of La Seu Cathedral stands out. The sea, calm and gently rippled, is traversed by small steamships leaving subtle trails of smoke. The composition employs a cool and restrained palette, with bluish-gray and watery green tones that enhance the misty, melancholic atmosphere of the scene.
The brushwork is loose and atmospheric, aligned with the Post-Impressionist tradition, with special attention given to the sky and its gradations, which occupy a large portion of the canvas. The result is a contemplative, serene scene in which sea and sky merge into poetic continuity.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: JOSEP COLL BARDOLET
Josep Coll Bardolet was born in Campdevànol (Girona) in 1912 and died in Valldemossa (Mallorca) in 2007. He trained at the Municipal Drawing School of Vic and later at the Higher School of Landscape in Olot. During the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in Belgium and France, where he furthered his studies and came into contact with contemporary European art movements. In 1944, he settled permanently in Valldemossa, which became the center of his artistic life.
His work is characterized by representations of Mediterranean landscapes—especially those of Mallorca—rural scenes, and folk dances, always approached with a serene and harmonious perspective. He also worked with gouache and printmaking. Coll Bardolet was an active cultural promoter in the Balearic Islands, organizing artistic and musical events. Among other honors, he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi by the Government of Catalonia and the Gold Medal of the Balearic Government.
SIMILAR ARTISTS
Josep Coll Bardolet can be situated within the tradition of 20th-century Mediterranean landscape painters, with Post-Impressionist influences and a sensitivity akin to lyrical realism. Some internationally renowned artists with stylistic or thematic affinities include:
Claude Monet (1840–1926): Especially for his atmospheric treatment of skies and water, although Coll Bardolet maintained a more recognizable and less abstract figuration.
Camille Corot (1796–1875): A key reference for European landscape painters, with a similar sensitivity in portraying misty horizons and scenes bridging realism and visual poetry.
Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923): Though with a more luminous and vibrant palette, he shares with Coll Bardolet a deep interest in the Mediterranean and everyday life along the coast.
Gustave Loiseau (1865–1935): A French Post-Impressionist who painted harbors and rivers with rhythmic brushwork and a comparable atmospheric mood.
Santiago Rusiñol (1861–1931): In terms of subject matter, poetic approach to landscape, and his affinity with Mallorca as a source of inspiration.

He remained in the Belgian capital until 1939, the year of the outbreak of the Second World War, when he decided to return to Spain. He initially settled in Barcelona. Subsequently, he remained for a few years in Mallorca, although with a hiatus of a few months in Madrid, where he studied engraving at the San Fernando Academy. Finally, in 1944, he settled permanently in Valldemosa (Mallorca). He exhibited in Vic, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, France, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and in the United States. Work Description
A luminous view of Barcelona’s Port Vell, with the neo-Baroque Customs building and the Portal de la Pau reflected in the calm waters of the harbor. In the foreground, sailboats and fishing boats form a horizontal frieze that contrasts with the vertical silhouettes of palm trees and towers in the background.
The brushstroke is free, broken, rich in impasto and chromatic transparency, capturing the trembling air of the Mediterranean. Ochres, pinks and blues merge into a vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of the artistic maturity of Rafael Durán Benet, who managed to infuse urban landscapes with the same poetic spirit present in his views of Cadaqués and the Costa Brava.
Artistic Commentary
Rafael Durán Benet represents the continuity of post-war Catalan Impressionism, heir to Joaquim Mir and to his uncle Rafael Benet i Vancells, yet with a looser and more modern interpretation. His painting blends architectural precision with chromatic freedom, achieving a balance between structure and emotion.
In this work, port architecture becomes a pictorial motif where color and light are the true protagonists. The sense of movement on the water and the warm atmosphere evoke the same sensitivity found in artists such as Ignacio Gil Sala, Jordi Pagans Montsalvatje...
