About the Item

This wonderful scene captures a young woman in a formal garden, her right arm cradling a basket of freshly gathered produce while her left hand holds an assortment of root vegetables and a small gourd. She stands before a low stone wall adorned with a classical urn, beyond which a stone house rises against a backdrop of rolling hills and soft blue sky. The architecture, with its mullioned windows and green shutters, along with the neatly ordered parterres, suggests an affluent rural estate somewhere in France or Belgium. Her attire, consisting of a white chemise, striped apron, and fitted bodice tied with a pink sash, is rendered with a crispness that complements the careful delineation of the surrounding masonry and foliage. The artist shows particular sensitivity to texture, from the worn stone blocks to the delicate petals of the garden flowers in the foreground. The figure’s forward gaze meets the viewer and imbues the work with a subtle narrative tension, as though we have happened upon her mid-task. This work is oil on canvas and appears to be unsigned. It is housed in a later gilt frame.
