This Continental School (circa 19th Century European) painting, Moonlit River, presents a hauntingly atmospheric nocturnal scene. A luminous full moon casts its light across a river spanned by a stone bridge, framed by trees and distant mountains. THE ARTIST / CONTEXT:
This painting belongs to the Continental School of the 19th Century, encompassing the broad range of European artists who worked outside the major academies but within the Romantic and post-Romantic spirit. Comparable traditions include the German Romantics Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, and Johan Christian Dahl, as well as French Barbizon painters such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. The directness of execution also recalls the folk and naïve sensibilities later celebrated in the work of Henri Rousseau.
Provenance Note: Alfred Trumble (1837–1890) was a noted art critic and editor of The Collector (later Trumble’s Collector), one of the earliest American art periodicals. Trumble’s writings and collecting played an important role in shaping 19th-century art appreciation and connoisseurship.
