Artist's family by descent
Corwin Knapp Linson was an artist and illustrator from Brooklyn, New York. From an early age he had an affinity for art, and was particularly influenced by the work of Thomas Nast. At sixteen years old, Linson earned an apprenticeship with a wood engraver based in New England.
In his later teens Linson travelled to Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian and later the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts under the direction of Gerome of Lefebvre and Jean Paul Laurens.
In his early days as an artist, Linson formed a friendship with Stephen Crane (1871–1900), the writer chiefly known for his Civil War novel, "The Red Badge of Courage".
Linson illustrated numerous articles and stories by Crane, which frequently addressed societal themes. Following Crane’s passing, Linson penned a book about him entitled "My Stephen Crane".
Linson traveled extensively, residing in Jerusalem from 1898 to 1902 as part of the American Colony Photo-Department, a group of artists associated with the American Colony Christian community. Beyond his painting endeavors, Linson contributed as an illustrator for magazines, produced prints, and crafted stained glass windows. Over his career, he showed his work at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Currently, Linson’s artwork is in the collections of the North Carolina Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, and Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum.

George Matthew Bruestle is an American Realist/Impressionist painter known for his intimate landscapes. Born and raised in New York City, Bruestle studied at the Art Students' League of New York in 1886 at the young age of fifteen and later in Paris. That same year, Bruestle visited Essex, CT and eventually purchased a second home in Hadlyme, Old Lyme as the Art Colony formed. Bruestle's main studio was in New York City.
Inspired by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot [1796-1875] and other French landscape painters, Bruestle's style was a mix of Early Realism and Early Impressionist techniques. Joseph Barrett (1936 – )
Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf.
A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet.
