About the Item
This painting was created in the heart of Hawaii’s winter storm season, on the North Shore of Oahu. That day, a powerful swell was crashing onto the beaches, which had been officially closed. The morning light was soft and muted, filtered through sea mist and haze that still lingered in the air after a night of roaring waves.
A few fearless people had come to the shoreline. They jumped and ran, playing with the waves like children, even though everybody knew how dangerous it was — these games often end badly. Their small figures looked fragile against the size and force of the ocean. The sky and sea seemed to merge into one—shifting, foggy, and uncertain.
Although Daria painted from far inland, she ended up soaked — ocean spray and foam carried on the wind reached even the easel. This piece became deeply personal. It’s not about form, but about feeling. It reminds of the work of Constable, the English painter who captured states of weather and atmosphere more than objects.
Painted on high-quality canvas with Italian oil paints, the piece was built up using mostly dry brushwork and short, flickering strokes — a technique uncommon for the artist, but chosen here to capture the movement of air, moisture, and light.
Daria Molostnova lives and works in Hawaii, where she discovered the true beauty of the surrounding world. Her paintings reflect the local reality, expressed through her personal cultural code. A graduate of the Russian State University of Design and Applied Arts named Stroganoff, she earned her master's degree, blending the traditions of classical education with a contemporary artistic perspective.
Daria grew up in a family of professional artists, her mother being a renowned designer and lead doll artist of the Soviet Union. Since 1997, Daria has been a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, and since 1998, a member of the International Union of Journalists.
She has taught at the Russian-Italian Art School Perotti and the Correspondence People's University of Arts. She has conducted numerous workshops both in Russia and abroad, as well as team-building activities for companies such as Harpers Bazaar, Mercedes, and Coca-Cola.
Daria has participated in international artist residencies in such countries as Bosnia, France, and Italy. She is a participant in many Russian and international art fairs, competitions, and exhibitions. Currently, she collaborates with galleries in Hawaii and California.
Her works are held in several Russian museums, as well as in private collections both in Russia and abroad.
