David Chapple was born in 1947 in Palo Alto, California. Chapple found his artistic talents at a young age. Winning art contests beginning in grammar school, Chapple won the local Langtham Foundation Award. He attended Arcadia High School and went on to the University of California at Santa Barbara earning a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology. While in school in Santa Barbara, Chapple worked as a taxidermist, giving him a special understanding of his developing interest in wildlife painting. Chapple was a professional football player at UCSB and participated in the National Football League from 1969 until 1975 as a kicker, winning All-Pro while with the Los Angeles Rams in 1972. He also started his professional career as an artist in 1970 while playing professional football for the Los Angeles Rams. His retirement from football in 1975 enabled him to turn his attention full-time to his artistic pursuits.
Primarily a contemporary oil painter under the influence of the early California impressionist landscape painters, Chapple has won numerous stamp contests for conservation groups and various state stamps for California, Kentucky, Utah, and Idaho. His lifelong passion for golf has translated into painting commissions for Jack Nicklaus, ABC Sports, Fred Couples, U.S. Open (golf), U.S. Senior Open, tour events, and various country clubs and golf courses around the country. Further extending his artistic talents into sculpture in the 1980s, Chapple was commissioned by many corporations including the Chiron Corporation, DuPont Nature Center, and Ameriflex, among others, as well as a life-size bronze of Florence Griffith Joyner at the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California. Chapple has been extremely active with Ducks Unlimited for several years and donates work annually for fundraising. A three-time finalist in the California duck stamp contest, Chapple has accepted invitations to exhibit at the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Bird Art Show in Wausau, Wisconsin, and at the Easton Waterfowl Festival in Maryland. "Pretty Pickins" Post-Impressionist Colorful Floral Oil Painting on Board Framed
Located in New York, NY
A joyous colorful floral still life painting depicting a bunch of freshly picked flowers placed effortlessly. The piece is done in a highly impressionistic manner and is a wonderful display of Reilly's more impromptu style, with bold colors of joyful yellow, deep rouge, and softer colors of light blue, hints of brown, and pops of pink. White ostrich daisies along with blue bluebells, orange, yellow and mamey flowers on a background of bright green grass and dark bushes in the background. This still life in nature, in the garden from nature. This bouquet reminds us of sunny summer days filled with the scent of flowers and nature. This piece is titled and has artist's estate stamp on the back, it comes housed in a contemporary gold leaf plain air wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Description
In California Lupines and Poppies, Angel De Service Espoy captures the vibrant splendor of California’s springtime wildflowers with lyrical brushwork and atmospheric sensitivity. A hillside awash in blooming blue lupines and golden poppies slopes gently toward a distant view of rolling hills beneath a soft, clouded sky. Espoy’s confident handling of color and texture brings the landscape to life, evoking the fleeting beauty of the state’s native flora and the delicate transitions of light across the land. This intimate composition reflects the artist’s deep affection for California’s rural countryside and his enduring legacy as a painter of its most poetic vistas.
Based on the painting’s style, subject matter, and scale, California Lupines and Poppies was most likely created between 1925 and 1940—a period when Espoy was actively painting California’s coastal and inland landscapes, particularly in the Monterey Peninsula and Carmel Highlands regions. The composition, with its gently rolling hills, distant haze, and vivid display of native wildflowers, closely aligns with Espoy’s known plein air works of the Central Coast.
The loose yet confident brushwork, naturalistic light, and spontaneous floral groupings all support the likelihood that this piece was painted en plein air. Espoy often created small-format oils like this one outdoors as finished works in their own right or as preparatory studies for larger studio paintings. His style blends Realism and Impressionism, drawing upon the influences of his training under Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) and the French Barbizon School, resulting in works that balance truthful representation with a painterly, light-filled immediacy.
Historical Significance
Born in Spain and trained in Barcelona, Angel Espoy immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century, eventually settling in California, where he became known for his floral landscapes, maritime scenes, and depictions of the Pacific coastline. Espoy’s lupine and poppy paintings are among his most beloved subjects, reflecting the natural beauty of the state and the influence of California Impressionism.
In the 1920s–1930s, Espoy’s work gained popularity among collectors who sought colorful, uplifting views of the West, particularly during the Depression era. His florals not only document California’s seasonal splendor but also contribute to the legacy of artists who elevated regional wildflowers to a fine art subject—following in the tradition of Granville Redmond, William Wendt, and Guy Rose. Today, Espoy’s flower-filled landscapes remain a favorite among collectors of early California art...
