"Harvest Sky" is an oil on canvas landscape painting by Pennsylvania Dutch folk artist and antique dealer, David Ellinger (American, 1913 - 2003). The 33.5" x 47.75" painting is of a Pennsylvania farm, featuring a traditional barn with weather vane and hex sign. The artwork is signed "D Ellinger" on the front lower left as well as signed and titled on verso. The painting is unframed. Framing options available for additional charges if desired. Ellinger was born in Philadelphia. His mother died when he was five years old and he did not get along with his new stepmother. This strained relationship caused him to run away to the country before he was even a teenager. Mary Law, a farmwoman in Gratersford, took him in and encouraged his artistic talent. After successfully graduating from High School, Ellinger continued to work as a farmhand and painted in his free time. He tried his hand at acting, and for a while, was a female impersonator, calling himself Una Hale, even joining a traveling troupe. Ellinger continued to paint, and, in time, he was asked to paint for a New York gallery. But because he wanted to paint whenever he felt like it, he did not accept commissions. In the 1930's, he worked as an artist for the WPA, Illustrating pottery for the Index of American Design. Ellinger will be remembered as a prolific painter in the Pennsylvania Dutch style. His paintings and theorems are owned by numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. He made his living as an antique dealer and sold his paintings to pay for what he needed to paint. Ellinger had 21 one-man shows during his career, including a retrospective at the Berman Museum un Pennsylvania in 1992. He was inspired by Pennsylvania German fraktur and is known for his charming theorems and painted scenes of farm life, school yards, and quilting bees. He studied at the Barnes Foundation and was a personal friend of Alfred Barnes, who owned quite a few of Ellinger's paintings. David Y. Ellinger often painted on velvet and cloth as well as on standard artists' canvas and panel. Ellinger died of heart failure on March 24, 2003 at 89 years of age.
