Slight yellowing to varnish due to age. In otherwise very good condition.
David Mead was born in London in 1906. A self-taught painter, he started painting landscapes at the age of 9, greatly influenced by F W Hayes.
Married with four children, he served in the RAF and then resigned from a later post in local government at St Marylebone, London, to become a professional artist.
His works show influence of the works of Constable, Corot and Claude Cardon, the latter living in the same town of Whitstable, gave great assistance.
One of his pictures was on loan to the National Gallery between 1942- 1944, and columns appeared in the press concerning his work, including the Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Evening News, as well as local and country papers throughout Kent, Sussex and West London.
He was not an artist who sought publicity and never had enough pictures available for a one-man exhibition, generally only selling through dealers, one being in Vancouver, rather than at competitive exhibitions.

David Mead
David Mead was born in London in 1906 and moved to Whitstable in Kent in 1910, at the age of four. Here he had the good fortune to reside next door to the famous landscape painter Daniel Sherrin, from whom he received guidance and encouragement for his paintings. His first watercolours were sold when he was only 12. He continued to paint and study painting, but it was only after his service in the Air Ministry during WWII, that he became a full time artist. He painted landscapes in oils, predominantly featuring trees and quiet pools and he excelled at painting trees. He was made a Fellow of the Central Institute of Art and Design in 1946. He founded the Medway Arts Society and served as its President for four years. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and one of his paintings is in Horsham Museum. A large proportion of his paintings are in private collections.
