About the Item

Mariano de Franceschi (Rome, 1849–1896) Watercolour on paper, signed lower right “M D. Franceschi” The image shows a painting, probably a river or lagoon landscape, created using a tempera technique on paper. The painting depicts a beautiful and poetic ‘en plein air’ scene, with a placid river in the foreground and a background that fades into the distance. There is a sandy shore surrounded by beautiful green vegetation on the left and a natural wooden structure overlooking a picturesque pier. A small boat with a stylised figure is moored near the shore. The landscape is dominated by a soft mist that blurs the details. Trees can be glimpsed and, on the right, a building resembling a church or cathedral with a dome and bell tower, perhaps inspired by Venetian or northern Italian architecture. Four mooring posts (bricole) emerge from the water, guiding the gaze towards the building in the distance. The palette is dominated by soft, pastel tones: blues, greens, whites and light browns. The atmosphere is misty and peaceful. The brushstrokes are visible and not overly defined, giving an impression of immediacy and freshness in the “Impressionist” style. The signature of the great artist can be seen in the lower right-hand corner. The work is framed with a beautiful air force blue passe-partout. The description of a work of art can focus on formal components such as line, colour, light and composition to leave an impression on the viewer. This painting uses the diffused light of the fog to create depth and a sense of calm. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts.
