About the Item

Jean Alexandre DEFAUX (1826-1900) Lake landscape with characters Oil on canvas signed low right Frames by Gault (Paris) Size canvas : 32 X 52 cm - Size frame : 52 X 72 cm Jean Alexandre DEFAUX (1826-1900) Born on September 1826, in Bercy and died on March 1900, in Melun French painter of the Barbizon School. Alexandre Defaux was born in Bercy, a city then on the outskirts of Paris. Mainly known for his oil paintings, Defaux also practices pastel and watercolor. He is a figure of the second generation of painters from the Barbizon School in the tradition of Jean-Baptiste Corot — whom he was a student of—and Jean-François Millet. His early landscapes reflect the influence of Corot with large panoramic urban views and characters in peasant costumes. He painted almost exclusively in the region of Barbizon or in Normandy. A large part of his work is in accordance with the repertoire of Barbizon’s subjects (scenes of agricultural life, domestic animals, undergrowth). But Defaux also painted scenes of boating Parisians on the lakes or picnickers in the middle of herds of sheep. Defaux regularly exhibited at the Salon until 1897. His Forest of Fontainebleau presented out-of-competition at the Salon of 1879 was acquired by the French State, as well as his large canvas from the Breton cliffs and the port of Pont-Aven, acquired in 1880. A gold medal was awarded to him at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. His works are preserved in French museums. Alexandre Defaux receives the insignia of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1881.
