About the Item

Over a hundred years ago, my grandfather registered as a homesteader with the Department of the Interior Land Office in Buffalo, Wyoming. Building a cabin on a remote 640 acre plat, he worked as a range hand at the neighboring Tipperary Ranch thirty miles east of the Big Horn Mountains. My father would also inherit this love of the West and he too would venture into the landscapes along with his father. They both dreamed of staying in Wyoming but both ended up living and working in Chicago. Several Years ago I found a set of architectural floor plans from 1959 that my father drew up for a house he intended to build in the area. The landscape was carefully surveyed and a set of renderings were made that included structural diagrams, heating ductwork routes, ventilation plans and plumbing diagrams. The house was never realized and the drawings sat undisturbed for sixty years. As an homage to my inherited passion for design and the love of wild places, I undertook a collaborative drawing project adding to my father's renderings and grandfather's maps. I added the animals as well as others native to North America, Yellowstone National Park and the Cloud Peak Wilderness Region of Wyoming. Making a home for the wilderness, natural animals, and inhabitants in these environments is necessary; this projects is a reconciliation between the generations of people that have struggled, dreamed and worked the landscapes that we all inhabit and must share. -Don Pollack Don Pollack Lily Mountain Trail, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado oil on canvas 20h x 20w in 50.80h x 50.80w cm DJP049 Don Pollack BIOGRAPHY Don Pollack is a Painter and Adjunct Associate Professor of Visual Communication at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work investigates among other things, the relationship between personal mythologies and representation in painting and how it may simultaneously give reference to a narrative. Working in cross disciplines has influenced his perspectives as projects begin with an epic adventure. Conceptually proceeding from the premise that all vision is historic and constructed, Pollack’s research starts with the planning of a long distance trek,– such as a 3000 mile journey via bicycle following Lewis and Clark. His work has utilized maps, documents, photography, painting, and installation. This work was routed in a previous investigation into the role of museums in the process of forming collective memory. Don studied design at the University of Illinois and painting at the Ohio State University where he received his MFA. The state of Illinois has recognized his history based work with a special bicentennial edition of the ‘Order of Abraham Lincoln’ award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and has shown many solo shows in, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Canada.

Near Wagon Mound, NM - Realistic Landscape Oil Painting
By Jeff Aeling
Located in Chicago, IL
Aeling’s fascination with meteorology is unmistakable in this dramatic skyscape. Since his earliest years in the West, he has been captivated by weather’s capacity to alter the emotional temperature of a landscape. In this painting, the low, turbulent cloudbank reveals his deep knowledge of sky structures—an understanding informed by both scientific observation and personal experience. The luminous blue patches above suggest hope breaking through uncertainty, a recurring theme in his atmospheric work. Jeff Aeling Near Wagon Mound, NM Oil on panel 10h x 14w in 25.40h x 35.56w cm JAE055 Jeff Aeling (1958–2025): The Sky Remembers Through Jeff Aeling’s eyes, the landscape becomes a world shaped as much by air as by earth. In works such as North of Las Vegas, NM and Pond Near St. Cloud, MN, he balances the quiet structure of plains and wetlands with skies alive in constant motion. His mastery of atmosphere is unmistakable in Light Pillars (2023) and Light Pillar (2023), where rare optical events turn night into architecture. Even intimate scenes like Crabapple, Dogwoods, and Red Bud find their emotional power under skies that lend the land its shifting character. Aeling’s winters in Hawaii deepened his sensitivity to movement and weather. Surfing taught him to read the rhythm of the ocean, a knowledge reflected in Wave, Kauai (2018), where a breaking wave becomes a luminous wall of force. In Volcano (2023), he channels the islands’ elemental drama, linking fire, vapor, and sky through the same atmospheric vocabulary found in his plains paintings...
