McIntyre’s Porthscatho captures the quiet rhythm of a Cornish fishing village, its boats drawn up onto the shore at low tide. The composition leads the eye across the sandy foreshore, where a single blue boat sits slightly apart in the foreground, its hull tilted, while a cluster of ochre, green, and brown vessels nestle against the rocky cliff to the right. Beyond, the ebbing tide has left broad, glistening sweeps of wet sand and shallow water, their silvery tones reflecting the shifting sky above.
The scene is painted with a vigorous hand, the strokes thick and textural, especially in the treatment of the boats and rock face. The overall palette is earthy and subdued; deep greens, browns, and ochres softened by cooler washes of blue-grey and white. Lending the work a grounded, elemental quality. There is a sense of stillness, but also of latent energy, as if the tide will soon return and the boats resume their purpose. The work is executed in oil on panel, with McIntyre’s characteristic expressive brushwork. With impasto strokes bring solidity to the boats and cliff, contrasting with looser, fluid passages in the sand and sea. The palette is muted yet harmonious, dominated by earth tones with carefully placed highlights of blue and yellow.

Donald McIntyre
British artist Donald McIntyre’s seascape paintings capture the essence of coastal shorelines through vivid compositions imbued with a calm simplicity. McIntyre's work embodies the Scottish Colourist tradition of landscape art. He places the viewer at the boundary of civilization and nature, with a strong focus on the natural scenery, as the images of manmade structures seem to fade into the background.
McIntyre was born in Leeds, Yorkshire. He studied dentistry at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and also attended night classes at the Glasgow School of Art. While working as a dentist, he served in the British Army, taught art classes and painted in his spare time.
In the late 1950s, McIntyre left dentistry to take up painting full time. He traveled throughout the British Isles, painting scenes of shorelines and countrysides, as well as occasional interior settings and portraits. The seascapes McIntyre created are a favorite among Scottish art collectors.
McIntyre exhibited at many galleries throughout the United Kingdom before his death in 2009. Many public and private collections contain his works, including the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth — as well as galleries in Birkenhead, England and Newport, Wales.
