About the Item

Wonderful, well painted oil on board by the talented artist and architect E. Donald Robb. Painted in 1928, inscribed on the reverse. E. Donald Robb (1880–1942) was a prominent American architect and artist best known for his mastery of ecclesiastical design and medieval-style draftsmanship. While primarily recognized as a leading architect of Gothic Revival cathedrals, his artistic contributions include intricate carvings, etchings, and hand-painted illustrations of religious structures. Key Artistic and Architectural Contributions National Cathedral (Washington, D.C.): Robb was a senior partner at the firm Frohman, Robb Little, which served as the architects for the Washington National Cathedral for decades. St. Thomas Church (New York City): While working for Cram, Goodhue Ferguson, he famously designed the ornate carvings for the "Bride's Door." This work gained notoriety for including a dollar sign hidden in the tracery, which Robb later explained as a traditional Gothic device contrasting vices with virtues. Ecclesiastical Etchings: Robb was a skilled etcher. One of his most recognized pieces is a 1911 hand-painted etching titled "The Cathedral," which showcases his deep study of medieval art and architecture. "Fifth Avenue" Figures: He designed a series of tiny frieze figures for the arch of St. Thomas Church’s main entrance, representing various social types of the era, such as "haughty dowagers" and "affected monocle-wearers".

"Stream, Southhampton"
By Joseph Barrett
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Illustrated in "Joseph Barrett, The Prime Years 1970s - 1990s", pg. 48, plate #055. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Joseph Barrett (1936 – ) Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf. A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes and hundreds of used paint tubes...
