About the Item

“Quebec City, 1853” by Edmund C. Coates (American, 1816-1871). A luminous 19th-century view of Quebec City by the American painter Edmund C. Coates, known for his detailed Hudson River scenes. The fortified Citadel and clustered city rise above the St. Lawrence River, dotted with sailing vessels beneath a soft, glowing sky. Figures in the foreground harvest wheat, lending a pastoral counterpoint to the bustling port below. Coates’s composition was almost certainly inspired by one of the popular printed views of Quebec circulating in the 1850s (like one by J Schroeder), yet the artist transforms that printmaker’s precision into something atmospheric and painterly. The work captures both the romance and industrious optimism of the era, rendered with Coates’s characteristic clarity and golden light. This work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower center. It is housed in a beautiful gold frame, ready for display. Size: 24 inches tall by 32 inches wide (painting) 31.5 inches tall by 39 inches wide by 2.5 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Shannon’s, CT, May 1, 2014, lot 149; Private collection About the artist: A versatile nineteenth-century painter, Edmund C. Coates created landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and history paintings. Born in England, Coates spent his adult life in New York City, where he was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design. Working in the style of the Hudson River School, Coates produced beautiful, idealized images of the lakes and mountains of the Hudson River Valley and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as romantic visions of ancient Italian ruins. He was closer in dates to the second generation of the Hudson River school, which included Frederic Edwin Church, John Frederick Kensett, Jasper Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and Albert Bierstadt, and David Johnson. His work can be now seen in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Shelburne Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery. Condition: Good overall antique condition. Relined. Stable craquelure commensurate with age. Scattered inpainting throughout, primarily concentrated in the sky and mountains.
