Description
The area near Mount Washington in New Hampshire was visited by many of the Hudson River School artists. This early scene by Lewis from 1859 shows an awe-inspiring view of Mount Washington.
Artists including Albert Bierstadt , John F Kensett. Thomas Hill, Harrison Bird Brown, William Trost Richards, Aaron Shattuck, James Hope, and James Suydam traveled to the White Mountain area returning with sketches and occasional large canvases like this canvas of Mount Washington . In the 1840’s and 1850’s American artists started exploring the phenomena of nature venturing into the Keene valley and White Mountains of New Hampshire. Those forerunner painters viewed their paintings as unique views which were truly American and inspiring. Lewis’s vantage point, in this 1859 painting ,shows both solitude and splendor in this special corner of America.

Edmund Darch Lewis
Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived there throughout his life. Lewis was one of the most popular landscape painters of Philadelphia during the late 19th century. He studied with artist Paul Weber from 1850–55 and used watercolors to capture marine and river scenes along the Eastern Coast. He exhibited extensively during his career, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Art Association, Boston Athenæum and Boston Art Club. Lewis’s paintings are found in museums, galleries, and private collections throughout the United States, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, United States Department of State, Bowdoin College, Worcester Art Museum, Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland, California and Bostonian Society. In Sailing Along the Coast, Darch uses gouache to bring to life the rugged coastline and the choppy ocean surf in this exquisitely painted marine scene.

Original pastel on archival paper by the well known Hudson River artist, George Douglas Brewerton. A Northern California scene near Mount Shasta. Signed lower left and dated 1876. Recently professionally matted and framed in new antique silver style gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 27 by 36 inches. Under glass. Condition is excellent. Provenance: A Pennsylvania collector.
George Douglas Brewerton received lessons in art from Prof. Robert W. Weir at West Point where his father was Superintendent. In 1874, he was detailed to San Francisco as an officer in the Stevenson Regiment. In 1848, he underwent many adventures in Western deserts and mountains with Kit Carson, who crossed the country with news of the California Gold Rush. After serving as an aide to Gen.
