About the Item

A finely detailed Alpine landscape in watercolor and gouache by British-born German painter Edward Harrison Compton (1881–1960), signed lower right. The composition depicts a tranquil mountain lake surrounded by steep rock faces and distant snow-covered peaks, rendered with exquisite sensitivity to atmosphere and light. Compton, the son of celebrated landscape painter Edward Theodore Compton, inherited his father’s fascination with the Alps and became one of the foremost interpreters of mountain scenery in early 20th-century European art. His watercolors are admired for their clarity, subtle color harmonies, and refined interplay between structure and spontaneity. Executed with controlled brushwork and delicate tonal gradations, this work exemplifies Compton’s mastery of combining topographical accuracy with poetic realism.
