Edward Richie Butler was born in Sacramento, California, in 1855 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme from 1877. He spent most of his career in Paris. He was one of Sacramento's most talented early artists. Butler was born and raised near the Crocker Art Museum on 3rd Street and N Street. He was the brother of artist Frederick S. Butler and son of Miner F. Butler, the architect of the California State Capitol in Sacramento. First exhibition in 1885 at the Salon. After a study trip through Italy, Butler settled in Überlingen on Lake Constance. He exhibited at many art exhibitions, including in Mannheim and Düsseldorf in 1907 and at the Munich Secession in 1908, as well as at Cassirer in Berlin.
