About the Item
This interesting British 1930's Post Impressionist town landscape oil painting is by noted Liverpool born artist Edwin Glasgow. Painted in 1936 and signed lower left, the painting was formerly the property of British artist John Heritage Peters. The composition is a town landscape with several figures in the street in the foreground as well as a horse drawn cart and motor car. Just behind them is a ruined building revealing more of the town landscape of buildings and a cathedral spire. The foreground is in shade but the buildings beyond are bathed in sunlight. The red of the broken bricks and yellow of the buildings are vibrant and eye catching. There is bold, square brushwork and heavy impasto. This is a fantastic painting and an excellent example of Edwin Glasgow's work.
Signed lower left and dated 36.
Provenance. Property of J Heritage-Peters inscribed verso. John Heritage-Peters (1891-1965) was a British artist known for his works depicting coastal scenes.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in gallery frame, 37 inches by 27 inches and in good condition.
Edwin Glasgow (1874-1955). Painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Liverpool, attended university there and in Oxford, several books of sketches of which he published. Was keeper of the National Gallery for several years in the 1930s. Exhibited RA, RI, provincial galleries and Paris Salon. Laing Art Gallery and Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne, holds his work. Lived at Charlbury, Oxfordshire.
