About the Item

Eiler Carl SORENSEN (Benløse 1869 - 1953) Interior with Staircase Oil on canvas H. 61 cm; W. 55 cm Signed lower right Circa 1930 Exhibition: 1969, Bordeaux, Exposition des Amis des Arts, under number 365 entitled "Village Festival in Lafite Park - Maisons-sur-Seine" Eiler Carl Sørensen was a Danish painter from a modest background, the son of a carpenter. He developed an early and keen eye for daily life and the rural landscapes around him, themes that would profoundly influence his work. He received his initial artistic training from Holger K. Grønvold before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. This academic training allowed him to acquire a solid mastery of drawing and oil painting, while remaining firmly within the Danish realist and naturalist tradition of the late 19th century. Eiler Sørensen's work is characterized by a great sensitivity to light and atmosphere. He primarily painted landscapes of the Danish countryside, but also genre scenes, interiors, portraits, and human figures integrated into their surroundings. His compositions, often peaceful and balanced, reflect a deep attachment to nature and rural life, rendered with nuanced colors and a subtle touch. His landscapes capture seasonal variations, country lanes, open fields, and gardens, in a discreet harmony between humankind and nature. With his understated yet poetic approach, Eiler Sørensen established himself as a respected representative of early 20th-century Danish painting, whose works continue to be sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Scandinavian art. Our canvas is one of the artist's interior works, blending intimacy and light. Here, the blue, the imagined staircase, the artworks hung in a cross shape, and the console table displaying the empty bowl invite our imagination. Who lives in this space? The decor is elegant, the tones fresh and inviting, and the window opens onto more vibrant colors, worthy of our idealized vision of Scandinavia.
