About the Item
Wonderful landscape of wheat sheaves with modernist vibe by Eleanor Walls Plau (Plaw) (American, 1878-1954).Wood frame. Signed "Plau" or "Plaw" lower left. Presented in rustic painted wood frame. 26"H x 36"L.
Born in San Francisco, CA on Jan. 16, 1878. Plau studied locally at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute under Arthur Mathews and later taught for many years in the public schools of San Francisco and Los Angeles. She lost many of her works in the earthquake and fire of 1906 and was a resident of Long Beach, CA in 1932-38. A spinster, she died at her home in Piedmont, CA on May 26, 1954. Her work includes portraits and still lifes and arts and crafts block prints and book plates. Exhibited: San Francisco Art Association, 1904; Mark Hopkins Inst., 1905; San Francisco Sketch Club, 1906-09; Long Beach Art Association, 1938.
