Private Spanish Collector, Barcelona This magnificent work of Meifren belongs to its third period which is in turn its time of fulfillment. This is probably Sitges beach, Barcelona, one of his favorite places. The work has a compositional scheme and framing of great modernity and its pure color bill has the freshness of what is captured quickly and easily. Its palette of white, blue, green, light and golden tones correspond to the unique light of the Mediterranean landscape. His powerful technique and unique sensitivity, make this work something very special, within the innovations of Impressionism but, adapting them to the expressive requirements of the artist. Eliseo Meifrén Roig (Barcelona, december 24, 1859 - february 5, 1940) was a Spanish painter attached to Impressionism Passionate about painting, he leaves the medical career and enrolls in the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His teachers were the artists Antonio Caba and Ramón Martí Alsina. He completed his training in Paris, where he marched for the first time in 1879, in the company of the painters Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, and where he survived with the sale of small paintings and notes, predominantly urban. That same year he won the first prize at the Regional Exhibition of Fine Arts in Valencia. The stay in Italy was also essential for its formation, where it relates to Catalan painters such as Ramón Tusquets, Arcadi Mas Fondevila. Back in Spain he participated in 1881 in the National Exhibition of Madrid. In 1882 he married Dolores Pajarín, making his boyfriend trip to Paris, where his first daughter, Rachel, will be established and born. His first major solo exhibition was in 1889, in the Parés Hall in Barcelona, where he presented sixty oils, almost all in large format. Meifrén surprises everyone, the artist, against the local custom, decides to auction all the paintings not sold in the exhibition. On this occasion, his friend Santiago Rusiñol will work as an appraiser. With the result of the sale, he travels to Italy, where he will paint especially in Venice and in Naples In 1892 he returns to Paris, and it is by intensifying his contact with the impressionist artists when a change in his pictorial style begins. Its palette becomes clear, it begins to use light blue, light ocher and golden tones, it begins to accentuate all the tones that the sea and the rivers present. In 1897 he moved to the Canary Islands, after receiving an invitation from Eusebio Navarro, President of the Literary Cabinet of Las Palmas. His house has just become an academy where young local artists such as Néstor Martín Fernández de la Torre, Juan Rodríguez Botas y Ghirlanda or Tomás Gómez Bosch attend. With the turn of the century, the notoriety of Meifrén reaches a peak. Mentions and monographs in the press of the moment, his works can be found in several exhibitions practically simultaneous, both in Barcelona and Madrid, as well as in Paris, Buenos Aires or Montevideo. However, after the commercial failure of his great exhibition in the Artistic Circle of Barcelona, the painter decides to leave and settle in Buenos Aires. There he will arrive in March 1903 and in May of that same year he will already participate in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, held in the Rafael del Bon Marché Hall. He hangs his oils in Buenos Aires Sala Witcomb, in which the Spanish José Artal worked as a dealer. In the same Gallery, Meifrén will organize a great exhibition of Catalan painting in 1904. Seventy-four works by twenty-three different artists, which Meifrén selects and among which includes five Picasso cakes, which will generate passionate criticism. But it is in Mallorca where he reaches pictorial maturity. All your color palette becomes saturated. The blues become a lively and dynamic element, the rest of the primary colors are accentuated and intensified. In 1905, after the death of Ricardo Anckermann, Meifrén was appointed Director of Escola d'Arts i Oficis de Palma from where he sponsored a young Joan Fuster Bonnin, a painter who would become one of the greatest exponents of Mallorcan art of the twentieth century. In 1906 he returned to present two works at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, and this time, finally, he was awarded the first class medal. Throughout this decade a Meifrén traveler repeatedly returns to Argentina, but also returns to France and Italy and visits Belgium to participate in the 1910 Brussels Universal Exhibition, where he will receive a silver medal. In 1911 he was named adoptive son of Cadaqués, an ampurdanese town where he lived for seasons and many summers throughout his life, and of which he is considered the artistic discoverer. In the spring of 1886 the artist, after touring the Catalan coast, arrives in the Empordà town, settling in Port Lligat. The population of Cadaqués will be your inspiration, your refuge, your summer rest, where you will share time with your friends and with your colleagues and rivals with the brushes. In 1915 he traveled to the United States, taking advantage of the San Francisco and San Diego International Exhibitions, receiving both the medal of honor. At the end of the same year, he settled in New York, where he mainly exhibits both landscapes of Mallorca and Cadaqués, as paintings made in the same city of New York or in New Jersey. After several vicissitudes, he returns to Barcelona in 1917, where he will continue exhibiting. His wife, Dolores, died in 1924. In 1930 he married Julia Marina Lamana. With the beginning of the Spanish civil war, Eliseo Meifrén and part of his family flee to the town of Manresa, where they will remain refugees until the end of the contest, in 1939. That same year, after a period of summer rest in Mallorca with all his family returns to Barcelona, where he prepares what will be his last exhibition. On December 16, 1939, a large individual exhibition was inaugurated in the Gaspar Hall in Barcelona with great success of the public and sales. However, a sick Meifrén cannot attend the event. A few weeks later, the artist suffers a worsening in his condition, dying in early February 1940. Among the many distinctions he received throughout his long career, the Knight of the Legion of Honor in France stands out in 1926. Despite the great diversity of places he visited around the world, he attached relative importance to urban views or mountains, leaving them in the background, the artist's attraction to the coast, beaches or rivers being a constant . His brush strokes distributed strokes, at first glance, in a disorderly manner, they make up extraordinary landscapes endowed with a deep lyricism.
