About the Item

EMILIO SÁNCHEZ PERRIER Spanish, 1855 - 1907 A ORILLAS DEL GUADALQUIVIR signed and located "E Sanchez Perrier / Sevilla" (lower left) oil on wood panel 15 x 21-1/4 inches (38 x 54 cm.) framed: 20-1/4 x 26-3/4 inches (51.5 x 68 cm.) Emilio Sánchez Perrier was a renowned Spanish painter born on December 10, 1855, in Seville, Spain, and died on February 7, 1907, in Rome, Italy. He is primarily known for his landscapes and scenes of rivers, forests, and gardens, which he captured with great mastery and realism. Sánchez Perrier came from a family with artistic tradition. His father was a sculptor, and his grandfather was an engraver. From a young age, he showed an interest in art and received his first lessons in drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville. Later, he moved to Madrid to continue his training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. During his time in Madrid, Sánchez Perrier studied under the tutelage of important artists of the time, such as Carlos de Haes and Martín Rico. These masters influenced his style and his approach to naturalistic landscape painting. Sánchez Perrier developed a precise and detailed technique, characterized by the meticulous representation of light, color, and texture in his works. Sánchez Perrier's work began to be recognized and appreciated both in Spain and abroad. He regularly exhibited in art salons in Paris and various European cities, where he received numerous accolades and awards. His reputation grew even further when his paintings were exhibited at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889. Much of Sánchez Perrier's oeuvre is focused on river landscapes, particularly the Guadalquivir River in Andalusia. His paintings demonstrate a great ability to depict water, reflections, and changes in atmospheric light. He also portrayed countryside scenes and gardens, capturing the serenity and beauty of nature. As his career progressed, Sánchez Perrier traveled extensively throughout Europe and visited places like France, Italy, the Netherlands, and England. His travels allowed him to explore different landscapes and enrich his artistic style. In addition to his technical mastery, Sánchez Perrier had a special sensitivity for capturing the tranquility and harmony of nature in his paintings. Emilio Sánchez Perrier died prematurely at the age of 51 in Rome, where he was undertaking an artistic residency. Although his life was short, his contribution to landscape art was significant. His works can be found in major museums and private collections worldwide, and his legacy endures as one of the prominent naturalist painters of his time.
