A closely related mid–late 19th century English landscape depicting a tranquil continental lake set beneath dramatic mountain peaks, with a sailing boat drawn up along the shore and figures walking a winding path past a rustic lakeside dwelling. The setting again evokes the Alpine or northern Italian regions favoured by Victorian artists travelling on the Grand Tour.
The composition mirrors its companion in both scale and intent, with a refined balance between human activity and expansive natural scenery. The artist demonstrates a confident grasp of atmospheric depth, using softened mountain forms and a delicately tinted sky to convey distance and calm. The handling of light—suggesting early morning or late afternoon—further reinforces the romanticised vision of continental travel so admired by English collectors of the period.
As with the first painting, the work reflects the English Romantic landscape tradition of the 1860s–1870s, combining academic training with a lyrical, almost narrative quality. Such cabinet-scale landscapes were produced for private interiors rather than exhibition, and were highly sought after for country houses and town residences alike.
The monogrammed signature corresponds with the companion painting, strongly supporting the conclusion that the two works were conceived as a pair.
Presented in its original gilt Victorian frame, en suite with the matching example.
