Erwin Günther studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where Olof Jernberg was his teacher. In Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the Malkasten artists' association, he established himself as a marine painter. He undertook numerous trips throughout Europe, traveling to the Netherlands from 1890 onwards, as well as to Egypt and other African countries. From 1891, he was represented at exhibitions at the Munich Glaspalast and, from 1893, at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. He created large decorative murals for the German shipping pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. He took part in the First World War as a cavalry captain.
