About the Item

Bathed in luminous Mediterranean light, Wisteria in Italy captures a dreamlike hillside scene glimpsed through a curtain of violet-blue wisteria blooms. The composition reveals Faith Kenworthy-Browne’s refined sensitivity to atmosphere and texture, hallmarks of her lyrical, impressionist-influenced style. A single tall tree anchors the view, while the soft blue haze of distant hills and the suggestion of water evoke a serene, timeless moment. Faith Kenworthy-Browne was a British painter known for her landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Educated at Sir Arthur Cope’s school and the London School of Art, she exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Society of Women Artists. Her work is characterized by quiet elegance and a strong sense of place, often capturing domestic and garden scenes, as well as vistas from her travels abroad. According to a handwritten label on the reverse, this painting was created from the vantage of “W.K.B.’s bungalow” in Italy—almost certainly a family residence. The work was lent in 1961 to Peter Kenworthy-Browne, a close relative of the artist and a known figure in the family's lineage. The painting remained in the Kenworthy-Browne family for decades before passing into a private British collection. Acquired by us from the UK in 2025. oil on wood panel unframed 30 x 22.5 cm (11 ¾ x 8 ⅞ in) framed 41 x 34 cm (16 ⅛ x 13 ⅜ in) no signature on front Provenance: Painted from W.K.B.’s bungalow in Italy; retained by the artist and subsequently lent in 1961 to Peter Kenworthy-Browne, a member of the same family; thence by descent within the Kenworthy-Browne family; later in a private British collection; a private collection UK until 2025.
