About the Item

Title: French Countryside Landscape Oil of Farmhouse Path and Pollarded Trees by River By Fanch Lel Size: 13.25 x 15.75 inches (height x width) Oil painting on board, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition with minor signs of wear and handling along the edges consistent with age. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This charming French landscape oil painting by Fanch Lel captures a vibrant pastoral scene featuring a country path leading toward a traditional farmhouse, framed by bright trees and reflected water. The composition is bathed in late autumn light, with long shadows falling across the grassy hillside and pollarded trees lining a tranquil river in the foreground. The signature painterly texture and expressive brushwork enhance the scene’s atmospheric quality. Executed in oil on board, this impressionist piece showcases Lel’s sensitivity to both natural form and seasonal light. The earthy palette of greens, russets, and ochres is offset by a serene blue sky with drifting white clouds, creating a peaceful and nostalgic mood. The row of pollarded trees—pruned back in the traditional European manner—adds a strong rhythmic structure to the composition and speaks to the agricultural heritage of regions such as northern or central France. Lel’s work offers both energy and calm, with textured impasto in the foliage and trees contrasting with the soft rendering of background hills and buildings. The presence of a narrow footpath leading the viewer into the composition adds a subtle narrative pull, inviting reflection and exploration. This piece would appeal to collectors who appreciate rustic charm, seasonal landscapes, and rural European scenes. It evokes a timeless countryside tranquility and would complement both traditional and modern interiors seeking a touch of warmth and natural beauty.

It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed and dated lower left. Previously with Galerie Jean-Marr, Le Havre, France. Henri Joseph Pauwels was a notable twentieth century Flemish painter, rooted in Impressionist traditions. He was born on 16 December 1903 in Sleidinge near Antwerp. He died on 12 March 1983 in Beveren-Waas. Pauwels trained academically in Paris, then in private studios in Antwerp. His early works demonstrate his academic training, but he was heavily influenced by Impressionism and his later work has a more vibrant palette and airy, loose brushwork. He was known for his plein air technique, as shown in this piece. Pauwels exhibited widely, mainly in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam and was successful both before and after WWII. Some of his works are held in public collections, including the Ghent Museum. His works were highly collectable amongst his contemporaries in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. He is known for a range of genres but is best known for his large canvases of romantic landscapes and country life. He also painted harbour scenes and some still life. His works remain collectable for their optimistic, poetic and nostalgic views of wholesome country life. © Big Sky Fine Art Discover Paysage Arboré, an original 1966 oil painting on board by Belgian artist Henri Joseph Pauwels (1903–1983). This tranquil landscape captures a lush, tree-lined riverbank rendered in rich Impressionist brushwork and a naturalistic palette of greens, browns, and blues. Signed and dated in the lower left, this collectible work showcases Pauwels’ mastery in capturing light, texture, and atmosphere in the Flemish countryside. A fine example of mid-20th century Belgian landscape painting...
