Description:
This dynamic French Impressionist painting by Fanch Lel captures the fast-paced energy of a horse race at Marville, near Saint-Malo. Painted in oil on corrugated card, the scene is filled with expressive motion as jockeys in colourful silks race forward on powerful brown horses across a pale green field. French flags flutter in the background, adding to the sense of festive excitement and national pride.
The location, handwritten on the reverse as “Marville (St Malo),” refers to a commune in the Brittany region of northwestern France, historically known for its local racing traditions. The blurred movement of hooves and jockeys—combined with Lel’s free, gestural brushwork—conveys the adrenaline of the moment and captures the spirit of an outdoor sporting event.
In the background, loosely rendered trees and fencing help frame the competition, while the layering of earthy tones and pale pastels creates atmosphere and depth. Lel’s technique is both spontaneous and suggestive, making the viewer feel immersed in the fleeting spectacle.
This piece is ideal for collectors interested in equestrian art, sporting scenes, or French cultural life. It would also appeal to admirers of impressionist works that emphasize energy, movement, and local character. A compelling and rare subject within Lel’s body of work, this painting offers a vibrant slice of regional tradition.

Fanch Lel
Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art. A member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques, Fanch Lel's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across France, including in Paris, Avranches, Dinard, and Pont-Aven, to name a few. His art has been highly sought after by collectors for decades.
