About the Item

Title: French Village with White Chapel and Spire under Stormy Sky by Fanch Lel By Fanch Lel Size: 7.5 x 9.75 inches (height x width) Oil painting on cardboard, unframed Condition: Good condition overall with minor surface handling marks and light wear to edges, consistent with its medium and vintage character. Painted on corrugated card, which adds visible texture and depth. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: In this moody, expressive village scene, French artist Fanch Lel captures the dramatic atmosphere of a rural hamlet beneath a stormy sky. The painting focuses on a cluster of whitewashed cottages with black slate roofs, dominated by a central chapel or church with a tall, narrow spire. The surrounding land is rendered in soft, gestural strokes of olive green, lavender, ochre, and cream—suggesting wild grasses, pathways, and coastal terrain. The sky, painted in layers of steely grey and muted blue, lends a heavy, almost theatrical quality to the scene, in stark contrast to the brightness of the village below. Lel’s bold brushwork and impasto technique give the impression of movement and changing light—hallmarks of French post-war Impressionism. The composition is framed by a light path in the foreground, leading the viewer’s eye through the painting toward the central spire. Though unsigned, this piece is unmistakably in Lel’s style—balancing abstraction and structure with a painterly confidence. The absence of fine detail adds to its emotional power, creating an evocative glimpse of a place shaped by weather, memory, and time. This work will appeal to collectors of expressive rural landscapes, particularly those drawn to French village architecture, religious structures, or dramatic skyscapes rendered with intuitive colour and form.
