Description:
In this moody, expressive village scene, French artist Fanch Lel captures the dramatic atmosphere of a rural hamlet beneath a stormy sky. The painting focuses on a cluster of whitewashed cottages with black slate roofs, dominated by a central chapel or church with a tall, narrow spire. The surrounding land is rendered in soft, gestural strokes of olive green, lavender, ochre, and cream—suggesting wild grasses, pathways, and coastal terrain.
The sky, painted in layers of steely grey and muted blue, lends a heavy, almost theatrical quality to the scene, in stark contrast to the brightness of the village below. Lel’s bold brushwork and impasto technique give the impression of movement and changing light—hallmarks of French post-war Impressionism. The composition is framed by a light path in the foreground, leading the viewer’s eye through the painting toward the central spire.
Though unsigned, this piece is unmistakably in Lel’s style—balancing abstraction and structure with a painterly confidence. The absence of fine detail adds to its emotional power, creating an evocative glimpse of a place shaped by weather, memory, and time.
This work will appeal to collectors of expressive rural landscapes, particularly those drawn to French village architecture, religious structures, or dramatic skyscapes rendered with intuitive colour and form.

Fanch Lel
Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art. A member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques, Fanch Lel's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across France, including in Paris, Avranches, Dinard, and Pont-Aven, to name a few. His art has been highly sought after by collectors for decades.
