About the Item

A very well painted landscape painting of a canyon near Palm Springs, CA by Ferdinand Piney Earle. Ferdinand was the father of Eyvind Earle, and highly talented California artist. Ferdinand was facinating character, with overwhelming passion for the arts. He was born in New York in 1878. He was educated at Cambridge and Oxford, then began his art studies in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts, Académie Julian, and with James M. Whistler. He returned to the US and studied at Art Students League in New York. He published his first book of poems in 1910. After a trip to Germany, Earle settled in Los Angeles in 1915. In Los Angeles he became an independent movie producer and director for silent pictures while painting landscapes and marine paintings in his leisure. In 1925 he founded and edited the magazine which dealt with literature, art, and poetry. In 1910, Ferdinand, who had separated from his forth wife, kidnapped their son and took him on a world tour where the two painted together in Mexico, England, Belgium, and France. He arrange his son's first one-man show in France, but was discovered by a private attorney hired by the boy's mother. Ferdinand's son was returned to his mother, and Ferdinand return to Los Angeles, where he remained for the rest of his life. This work was created in Palm Springs in 1926, and is a very well painted depiction of a canyon. The painting is oil on stretched canvas, and is housed in a period frame.
