About the Item
Painting (oil on canvas 16 x 24 cm, with wooden frame 23 x 31.5 cm) signed at lower right in red italics "Carcano." The back of the canvas reads in cursive ink "To Peppino Imbastaro so that he may remember through Filippo Carcano also me Nino Salvaneschi October 1916" This detail is very interesting and recounts a cross-section of the life of Milan's cultural elite in the early twentieth century as well as an affectionate sign between colleagues. Nino Salvaneschi was a prominent journalist and writer from Lombardy and Peppino or Giuseppe Imbastaro, both worked for the Roman newspaper "La Tribuna," where they probably met.
The work depicts, with a technique influenced by nineteenth-century artistic currents such as the Macchiaioli and realism, with extreme naturalness and a painting of light and warm colors a country scene, in which a maiden, probably a peasant girl, with a long dress and hair wrapped in a red kerchief, leads three white oxen toward two buildings with very pointed roofs, which can be assumed to be the house and the stable.
