Laundry Day (Untitled), c. 1940s, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 30 x 24 inches
Florence Walton Pomeroy was a New Jersey-based artist who primarily created portraits, still lifes, and American Scene oil paintings, often of the urban environment such as the present work. She studied with George Bellows, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Ann Goldthwaite, and at the New York School of Applied Design for Women. Pomeroy was a member of, and exhibited extensively with, the National Association of Women Artists. From the late 1910s through the 1940s, Pomeroy also showed in New York at the Society of Independent Artists, the National Academy of Design, and the Bonestell Gallery, where she was honored with a solo exhibition in 1947. Pomeroy was a member of the Montclair Art Association and served on juries for some of its exhibitions, including with Ernest Fiene. She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art and other standard references.

About the Painting
At the center of Oscar Daniel Soellner’s Lake Street, we see the stairway leading to an elevated railway station on what is now Chicago’s Green Line route. When its first section opened in 1893 as the second permanent elevated rapid transit line in Chicago, this route was known as the Lake Street Elevated Railroad. Chicago’s “L,” like the New York subway and rapid transit system, played an instrumental role in the development of the urban economy and the overall look and feel of the city. The formal aspects of urban railroads and the role they played in efficiently moving large number of everyday citizens across America’s growing metropolises were catnip for many American Scene painters during the first half of the 20th Century. Bio: Born Stella Elmendorf in San Antonio, Texas on December 17, 1885, she studied with Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York City in 1910-1911. She took part in the Armory Show of 1910. She added the initial T. as a middle name at that time, as she was known by her fellow art students as "Texas".
She married Dr. W. Russell Tylor in Madison, Wisconsin in September, 1919. They had one daughter, born May 2, 1925 in Chicago. From 1927 on until her husband's death in 1945, she lived and worked in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Thereafter, she returned to her hometown of San Antonio, Texas, where she continued to be active until about 1975.
She won numerous awards over her long career, including, among others, first prize at All Illinois Society of Fine Arts, Chicago and purchase prize at the Witte Museum, San Antonio, and was exhibited in New York City, San Francisco, Wilmington, Austin, and San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. Tylor passed away in New Braunfels...
