View of Lake, oil on canvas, 7.5 x 9.5 inches (Framed size: 13.5 x 11.5), $425 Francis Hubert Zimbeaux (1913 – 2006) has been a major figure in Utah art for over 60 years. He is best known for atmospheric landscapes, lyrical figure paintings and vibrant abstracts. Represented throughout his career by the Phillips Art Gallery, his work has also been included in major exhibits and many prominent private collections. In 2002, Zimbeaux was celebrated by the Springville Museum of Art Olympic Committee as one of "100 Most Honored Artists of Utah". Throughout his life Francis loved the outdoors, camping and roaming the desert, hiking the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, sailing, strolling through his Sugarhouse neighborhood, and enjoying nature in his wild and wonderful backyard. At local art galleries this tall handsome man was easily recognized decked out in a jaunty black French beret. He was a quiet, gracious, fiercely independent man, a loyal friend, a gentle creative visionary, a lover of the natural world and a passionate artist - a true French romantic in every sense of the word. -- “The transcendent place Zimbeaux seeks, takes form in oil, pen and ink, or watercolor, as a serene Utah landscape, an idyllic pastoral of frolicking nymphs, or even a jubilant abstraction. At 85, he continues to search for the unspoiled meadow, desert, and lakeshore, traveling in this camper to backpack and canoe in the Utah countryside. His landscapes are tonal works in blues, greens, grays, and ochres. Long, undulating mountains are layered with broad expanses of lake and field bathed in soft light, sometimes moonlight, sifting through cloud-filled skies. The brushwork is loose, the paint layers unvarnished and absorbent, cool yet introspective with a tinge of melancholy.”
