About the Item
Dawn and dusk II is a unique oil on canvas painting by contemporary artist Franco Salas Borquez, dimensions are 60 × 80 cm (23.6 × 31.5 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This painting portrays the ocean, captured in a moment that seems either just before or just after a storm. Through his choice of colours and expressive brushstrokes, the artist evokes the shifting drama of the sky—where dark clouds collide with luminous openings. This atmospheric tension contrasts with the deep, brooding tones of the sea below.
Franco Salas Borquez employs a variety of techniques in his symbolic seascapes, yet he consistently favours oil paint for its ability to convey the transparency and depth essential to depicting water. His rendering of the waves—intuitive yet highly controlled—achieves a fluidity that echoes the natural movement of the sea. This realism allows his works to evoke the same contemplative feeling one experiences when observing nature directly.
The artist draws from an internal “memory archive” of oceanic imagery, which grants him the freedom to create spontaneously. His paintings generate sensations that are ultimately reinforced by their titles, adding a subtle literary dimension to the visual experience. Through a restrained palette and carefully sculpted light, each work unfolds like a quiet narrative.

Franco Salas Borquez
Franco Salas Borquez’works depict the sea, the sole subject of his paintings. The artist paints the waves using an intuitive but rigorous hand to achieve the same degree of fluidity as the sea. Thus, his artworks, thanks to the effect of realism, reproduce the same sensation that comes from contemplating nature. His works are now exhibited in museums collections and in numerous international galleries and fairs. He received an award from Spain’s Institute for Maritime History and Culture in 2010, and another one from the Paris Marine Museum in 2011 and 2014. “The sea is ultimately a fairly limited subject, but I like to play with these limits, it fascinates me. It’s like a game of chess where the board has 24 pieces, but there are infinite possibilities of combinations.”

Night Sea
By Franco Salas Borquez
Located in Boston, MA
Born in 1979 in Chile, on the island of Chiloé, into a family of sailors, Franco Salas Borquez has kept a certain relationship with the sea, both nurturing and dangerous. The dark and raging sea, the one that commands respect.
As a child, he distinguished himself as a chess player, until he became national champion at 13 years old. The discipline is almost considered a sport in Chile. His talent as a player makes him represent his country in many tournaments. “I trained four hours a day. "
But the young man is also "absolute" passionate about drawing. So much so that he decides to embark on a career as an artist. It was in France, where he first landed as a language assistant, that his career took off. His first sea paintings quickly spotted him and opened the doors of institutional collections to him in 2010. Affirming an increasingly contemporary pictorial approach, Franco Salas Borquez works his works with a sort of memorial archive of oceanic images...
