Mount Lycabettus opposite to the Acropolis in Athens was reputed to have been populated by wolves (lukoi in Greek) in Antiquity. This gave rise to legends. Our painting may be the illustration of one of these legends.
François Maurice Roganeau studied with Jean Léon Gérôme and Gabriel Ferrier at the Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris. He won the first Grand Prix de Rome in 1906. He started out in illustration for books and newspapers and had his symbolist period. For instance at the Salon in 1912 he exhibited "Le Soir, à la Rivière", inspired by one of the Ancient Poems by André Chénier. Or “The Poet” or “Eloge de l’Italie” (to illustrate Bucoliques et Georgiques by Virgil, Paris, 1931, ill. pl. X)
sold at auction with Christie's in 2018 and whose dimensions and style are very close to that of our painting.
