About the Item

Oil on board Image size: 14 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches (37.5 x 30 cm) Contemporary hand made frame A dramatic, and highly colourful, depiction of the crashing waves of the open seas. The Artist Frank Lewis Emanuel, also known as Frank L Emanuel, was a painter, printmaker, draughtsman and writer. He spent most of his life in his hometown of London. Born in Bayswater in 1865, the artist died only a twenty minute walk away in Kensington in 1948. In his youth the artist assisted in classes at the University College London. Later on he studied under Alphonse Legros, at the Slade School of Fine Art, and under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris. Emanuel had a varied career and travelled widely in Europe (including France, Belgium and the Netherlands), Africa and Ceylon. Emanuel was the founder and Honorary Secretary of the Society of Graphic Art, a member of the Society of Marine Artists and worked as an examiner for the Royal Drawing Society. He also taught etching at the public school of The Central School of Arts Crafts between 1928 and 1930. This school would later become the London Institute in 1986 and would merge with Saint Martin's School of Art to form Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in 1989. Emanuel exhibited in several main galleries including at the Royal Academy from 1886. Indeed, he exhibited here almost annually for over forty years. He also exhibited at Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Art, New English Art Club and the Paris Salon. His work was further popularised through his publication of postcards by the well-known firm Raphael Tuck Sons. Emanuel's work is currently held by institutions including the Tate Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ashmolean Musuem, the Imperial War Museum, Guildhall Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

View Across a Lake, 19th Century British School Watercolour
Located in London, GB
British School 19th Century View across a lake Watercolour, monogrammed & dated ’02’ lower right Image size: 11 3⁄4 x 17 3⁄4 inches Framed This ethereal landscape certainly draws upon the nineteenth century European Romantic tradition. The cool palette of blues, silvers and whites creates a sense of wonderment, together with an atmosphere of solitude and journey’s end. At first glance the scene is rather surreal, but the presence of a dry-stone wall and iron railings in the foreground familiarises the landscape. Léon Frédéric (1856-1940) A seascape, oil signed
By Léon Frédéric
Located in Paris, FR
Léon Frédéric (1856-1940) A Seascape, Heyst signed at the lower right Oil on canvas transfered on panel 21 x 26.5 cm Framed under glass : 38.5 x 45 cm Certificate from the artist's son, Georges Frédéric, on the reverse. This seascape by Léon Frédéric is part of a series of landscapes inspired to the artsits by the shores of Heyst, near the Belgian coastal resort of Knokke. Although he found much inspiration in the rolling landscapes of the Ardennes, particularly in the area of Nafraiture, at the other end of the country, the North Sea offered him a completely different motif and an opportunity to explore another source of inspiration. Of particular interest is the similarity in inspiration and execution between this painting and the works of another famous Belgian artist from the same period: Léon Spilliaert (1881–1946). Spilliaert also frequently depicted the North Sea coast in his work. Frédéric must have been familiar with Spilliaert's work, as the two artists followed similar artistic paths, particularly with regard to the Symbolist movement. This artist's work may therefore have served as a source of inspiration for Frédéric, and this painting in particular seems to bear witness to that. Léon Frédéric was born on 26 August 1856 in Brussels and died on 25 January 1940 in Schaerbeek. The son of a prosperous jeweller, Léon Frédéric was apprenticed to the painter-decorator Charle-Albert in 1871, and attended evening classes at the Brussels Academy. In 1874, he worked in the private studio of Jean-François Portaels. The following year, he joined forces with a group of young painters to rent a studio where they could study live models. From 1876 to 1878, he prepared for the Prix de Rome, which he failed, but his father offered him a year's travel to Italy. From 1878 to 1879, he made his debut with the artistic group l'Essor, which brought together proponents of realism. In 1883, he was hailed as a promising painter with his painting Les Marchands de craie, a triptych combining modernism with the genius of the primitive masters, and in the 1890s he became one of the most popular painters in Belgium, cited alongside Constantin Meunier and Eugène Laermans. On 24 April 1929, King Albert I awarded Léon Frédéric - at the same time as James Ensor - the title of Baron. In 1882, he discovered the work of the French naturalist painter Jules Bastien Lepage...

George Howell Gay (American, 1858-1931) Untitled Seascape, c. late 19th-early 20th century Watercolor on board 12 x 17 3/4 in. Framed: 16 1/4 x 22 1/4 in. Signed lower right: Geo Howell Gay George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Gay also painted snowscapes, but these are scarcer. It is unusual to find an oil painting by this artist, as he worked mainly in watercolor. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago. He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art...

Late 19th Century Maine Seascape
By Constantin Aleksandrovich Westchiloff
Located in Soquel, CA
Evocative seascape, circa 1900, by artist Constantin Alexandrovitch Westchiloff (1877-1945) Signed on bottom left corner and on verso. Titled "Maine" on verso. Presented in a contemporary giltwood frame. Image size: 9"H x 12"W. Framed size: 10.60"H x 14"W x 1"D Westchiloff is an American-Russian artist. He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945. He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline), but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects. His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique. This in turn imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...
