About the Item

Old 17 Mile Drive, Carmel California Landscape Early 1900s Oil on Linen Gorgeous early 20th century landscape of rugged Carmel Old 17 Mile Drive coastline by Frank Lucien Heath (American, 1857-1921), circa 1900. The blue misty Pacific Ocean can be seen through the dense California Redwood coastal trees, a classic Monterey coast landscape view. Layers of impasto and bold brush strokes creates an early California masterpiece by the Santa Cruz artist and teacher. The Santa Cruz Museum and library have examples of his works. A rare and in demand painting of the Monterey 17 Mile Drive. A treasure of the Monterey Bay Coast. Signed "F.L. Heath" lower right corner. Presented in rustic wood and linen frame. Image size: 18"H x 26"W. Framed size: 22.50"H x 30.25"W x 2.50"D. Born in Dallas near Salem, OR on July 3, 1857. In 1866, Heath moved with his family to Santa Cruz, California where he remained. His father, Lucien Heath, was president of the County Bank of Santa Cruz and was twice elected to the California State Legislature. The younger Heath showed artistic talent at an early age and studied art at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco at the San Francisco School of Design under Raymond Yelland, whose influence was apparent in Heath's realistically depicted works. He taught at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute Following graduation from that school, he opened a studio in San Francisco where he painted and exhibited for 11 years before returning to Santa Cruz in 1885. From his studio on Beach Hill overlooking the bay, he painted many marines and landscape scenes. He took his many students on painting excursions. This group of artists was known as the Jolly Daubers and was the forerunner of the Santa Cruz Art League, which Heath established with Margaret Rogers in 1919 and served as its first president. Heath was active in Santa Cruz until his death there on April 21, 1921. Realistically depicted, his works show the influence of Yelland. EXHIBITIONS Exh: Calif.
