About the Item
Early Twentieth Century Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas on stretchers of Flanders with church and figures. A large and impressive painting by Frank Spenlove Spenlove RI, ROI, RBA, R Cam A and RBC.
This painting is very special, it was owned by an eminent British Psychiatrist and was in his personal art collection for many years before it was on loan to a museum. This scene is both a subject and location that Spenlove returned to several times, and as far as I am aware, most of the others of similar size and subject are also in museum collections.
British Painter 1868 - 1933 who founded the Yellow Door School of Art in Beckenham, Kent. This painting has the studio stamp of the Yellow Door School of Art on the back of the Painting. Spenlove was born at the Bridge of Allan, Stirling and studied in London, Paris and Antwerp. He exhibited at all the major galleries and won a Gold Medal at the Paris Salon in 1901. He worked mostly in Holland,
Belgium and England.
Spenlove painted with broad flowing brush strokes using refined often soft colours in an impressionist style. His attractive paintings and his famous studio influenced many generations of future artists. Works by this important artist can be seen in many Galleries in England including the Guildhall, and abroad in the Luxembourg Museum and the Hotel de Ville Paris.
