About the Item

This atmospheric marine painting by Frederick Calvert captures a dramatic seascape with two prominent boats as the focal point, set against a broad, shifting sky. The vessels—likely fishing smacks or coastal trading boats—are seen from the side and slightly angled, their sails catching the wind as they move steadily through choppy grey-blue waters. The overall palette is muted and naturalistic, with soft blues, greys, browns, and cream highlights. Calvert’s brushwork is precise but not rigid, especially in his treatment of the sea’s surface, where he blends movement and reflection with quiet confidence. The painting is frame and includes a name plate with the name of the artist. 31.5 H x 46.5 W unframed. This painting exemplifies Calvert’s ability to convey not just the physical reality of maritime life, but also its mood and rhythm—making him a distinctive voice in early 19th-century British marine art. Frederick Calvert (c. 1785 – c. 1844) was an accomplished 19th-century Irish-born artist known primarily for his coastal and marine paintings, as well as topographical and architectural views. Born in Cork, Ireland around 1785, Calvert first gained recognition through his detailed landscape and architectural drawings, exhibiting works in Dublin with the Society of Artists and the Hibernian Society by 1812–1815. In 1815, he moved to England, where he published a series of views of Tintern Abbey and a manual titled Lessons on Landscape Colouring, Shadowing and Pencilling, showcasing his technical fluency in draftsmanship and instruction. By the 1820s and 1830s, Calvert had established himself in London, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street and the British Institution. His 1830 publication Picturesque Views in Staffordshire and Shropshire highlighted his topographical accuracy and artistic sensibility, while his marine subjects revealed his affinity for Romanticism, with dramatic seascapes and sensitive use of light and atmosphere. Though less well-known today, his paintings are held in important collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He is believed to have died between 1844 and 1852.
